Home to a diverse mix of modern all-inclusive luxury and individual charm, Jamaica has long been luring visitors to its flawless beaches, adventure-filled mountains and unique rocky coasts. There are many sides to this charismatic island, from an oasis of relaxation to a wonderland of tropical mist forests.
As the Caribbean’s third largest island, Jamaica is endowed with a deep sense of culture, charging it with an energetic spirit that makes it one of the most exciting and lively destinations in the Caribbean. Combined with excellent adventure-sports, indulgent spas, and world-class golfing facilities, Jamaica continues to draw travellers in time and time again.
Activities
Recently blessed with first-class improvements in marinas and yachting facilities, Jamaica is an extremely attractive port-of-call. An activity-lover’s paradise, Jamaica’s brilliant shore-front offers an enviable choice of water sports, from kayaking and kite surfing to deep-sea fishing and diving.
Or escaping to the rich canopy of the mountains, take a tour through the heights of the lush rainforest where rafting opportunities abound in the rivers near Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, and Port Antonio. For a less-adventurous but no-less spectacular adventure, Jamaica is home to several championship golf courses.
Beaches
Even if the beach is as far as you venture, a visit to Jamaica will be worth the time, boasting over 1000 kilometres of coastline, from white-sand beaches on the north to the black-sand of the south. The beaches on Jamaica’s north coast are considered some of the world’s best, and to spend a day on these sugary-sanded paradises is worth coming ashore for.
Montego Bay
Montego Bay is the second-largest city in Jamaica, where traditional culture and premier lifestyle collide in a burst of eccentricity. Known as the Bay of Good Weather, Montego Bay is home to the whitest of powdery sands and mineral springs.
The loveliest section of sand can perhaps be found in the gentle, calm cove of Doctor's Cave Beach, an excellent family playground hosting water sports and delicious local cuisine. A perfect launch point for exploring the Island, Montego Bay hosts a superlative marina, offering 427 metres of berth for docking vessels up to 150 metres in length.
Negril
Negril could perhaps be called the relaxation capital of the world, embodying the Caribbean art like no other. This is where Jamaica is at its most laid-back, and the atmosphere occupying the coral shoreline and simple streets of this town is strangely addictive. Home to the island’s most beautiful beaches, Negril is also a haven of fine cuisine and intriguing nightlife.
Ocho Rios
Ocho Rios, once a small fishing village, is home to one of Jamaica’s major ports, and consequently is a bustling-array of amazing attractions and cultural diversions. Immensely beautiful waterfalls tumble through nearby rainforests, and the newly designed Island Village entices visitors to peruse its shop-lined streets and art galleries.
Port Antonio
What the intrinsic Port Antonio lacks in modern-style, it more than makes up for in tumble-down charm and awe-inspiring beauty. Hosting a scenic double harbour, this traditional Jamaican village mixes brightly coloured tin-roofs with fading Georgian facades in a way that only makes it all the more alluring. The modern marina benefits from a protected harbour and a channel that preserves its exclusivity, permitting several deep-draft vessels but not allowing larger cruise ships to enter.
Local Pursuits
A premier rafting destination, Port Antonio is a perfect destination for outdoor entertainment, tempting visitors to cycle through its rainforests, bathe in its cascading waterfalls and hike its glorious mountains. Also acting as a fishing hot-spot, Port Antonio holds its well-renowned Marlin Tournament each October, the oldest and most respected in the Caribbean.
