Week Commencing 13 June 2011
An enduring challenge for those at the heart of the luxury industry is in creating products that successfully combine style and functionality. That challenge has become increasingly urgent in the realm of technology, as more and more consumers consider not just how their purchases perform, but also look.
One company to have repeatedly hit bulls-eye is Vertu, makers of luxury mobile phones. Anyone to have handled one of their creations will testify that they have an unerring knack of finding the right balance between practicality and elegance.
At the recent Monaco Grand Prix, I had the opportunity to sit down with one of the men behind the emergence of ‘sexy’ technology – Alberto Torres, former CEO of Vertu and now a board member of Bang & Olufsen. Mr Torres proved a fascinating character – his passion for design (not to mention cars) emanating from every pore. Check out our video for the full interview.
Elsewhere this week we preview one of the most eagerly-anticipated car auctions of the year. The RM Auctions sale will take place at the Salon Privé event in west London next week, with some truly magnificent classic automobiles up for grabs.
In other news, we feature a stunning new timepiece from illustrious Swiss watch-makers Chopard, an innovative new concept for outdoor entertainment on the backwaters of London’s River Thames, and a diamond encrusted iPad costing a cool £750,000.
Finally we review some of the most luxurious properties in two of the most exotic locations in the world: the Caribbean island of St Martin and the Maldives. Lap it up!
