McQueen Rolex sells for 20 times estimated value

In a shock move that had both antiquarians and horologists amazed, Steve McQueen's Vintage Rolex was sold at auction for 20 times its estimated value.

The auction in question was that of Antiquorum's Important Collectors' Wristwatches, which took place last Friday in New York City. The watch on the block was avid racer and actor Steve McQueen's classic 1967 Rolex Submariner that set a new world record for its reference when it sold for US$234,000, 20 times its estimate.

Other McQueen items on offer were his 1929 Scott Super Squirrel motorcycle, hand-painted and exquisitely detailed by pin-striping genius Von Dutch and the Heuer Monaco watch worn by him in the 1971 racing film, Le Mans. The motorcycle sold for US$276,000 while the Heuer Monaco sold for US$87,600.

Evan Zimmerman, President and CEO of Antiquorum, had this to say about the events of the day, "Today's auction is clear confirmation that in the current market, collectors are looking for horological rarities with noteworthy provenance."
