Notes From The Editor

Week Commencing 31 December 2012

As another year draws to a close, we find ourselves juggling the desires to look back on all that has been achieved in the world of luxury in 2012, and forging ahead into the coming 12 months which promise to be more exciting than ever.

The luxury industry’s resilience in the face of the global economic downturn has certainly been at the core of the sector’s enduring success, ably assisted by the design community who have continued to push the boundaries and, ultimately, encourage spending on more new and exciting products.

To wrap up the year, we look forward to one of the most prestigious events on the luxury calendar: the SIHH watch fair, which will take place in Geneva in January. Around 12,000 exclusively invited visitors will be in attendance for what is at once a celebration of watch-making, and a chance for brands to showcase their latest creations. We review SIHH 2013 in today’s newsletter.

Also this week, we report on a stunning exhibition taking place at London’s Somerset House, celebrating the work of iconic Italian fashion designer Valentino. Called "Valentino: Master of Couture", the exhibition features mannequins clad in some of the designer’s most famous dresses and runs until March 2013. We bring you an exclusive video of the exhibit, which you can view in today’s newsletter.

There’s also news from car makers BMW who are set to launch their new M6 Gran Coupe model next summer, a beautiful timepiece from Piaget (one of many to be presented at SIHH 2013) , and the revamping of a legendary Rolls-Royce from the 1930s.

If that’s not enough, there’s a feature on a new range of love-themed trinkets from jewellery makers Montblanc, a hand-held portable travel safe by German luxury brand Döttling, and more.

Have a wonderful New Year celebration and see you on the other side!
