Sail Yacht Athena
Luxury sailing yacht Athena is a technological wonder built in 2004 by Dutch shipyard Royal Huisman. With Alustar hull and superstructure, her naval architects are Pieter Beeldsnijder and Dykstra & Partners, while she features exterior design by Pieter Beeldsnijder, and the interior work of Rebecca Bradley. This classic vessel measures 90 metres and can accommodate up to 10 guests.
Athena can claim to be both the largest private sailing yacht in the world and one of the largest launched since the 1930s, boasting all the performance of a modern yacht with the styling of a classic sailer. The result of a 350-strong building team at Huisman, she proudly flies the Cayman Islands flag.
This luxurious three-masted schooner boasts a decadent interior with a media lounge, extensive library and commercial grade kitchen along with litany of other plush amenities.
In 1998, American software mogul Jim Clark commissioned the 47.4 metre Hyperion to be built, only to change his mind during construction. Lacking the extra luxuries and facilities he desired, Clark asked Beeldsnijder to sketch a larger design complete with ultra-modern comforts. After years of discussions, designs and alterations, Clark agreed to build the 90-metrer schooner to be delivered in April 2004; the largest all aluminium sailing yacht ever built.
Some of the superyacht’s finest features include the media lounge; a bridge deck area primarily used as a gathering area and observatory point but also featuring a 400 DVD and 2,500 CD collection, and a 60 inch plasma screen. There is also a controlled environment space in the main deck dive locker that has bottle-filling facilities, diving gear stowage and a workshop. There is also a decompression chamber on board. The galley is also a sight to see, decked out like a five-star restaurant with only first-class cooking, chilling and freezing gear.
Aft of the observation point on the deck is an al-fresco dining table flanked by two staircases leading to the main deck. The main aft deck features food prep and wet bar stations while the aft deck lounge has sunbathing areas with wind protection.
Amongst her five cabins are an indulgent master cabin; three Queen suites; and a twin cabin. The master cabin is furthest aft on the superyacht ands sits adjacent to the owner’s study. The bath includes a whirlpool tub. The library is all carved woodwork with rope lighting, while the main salon is split into two separate seating areas; one featuring a game table and piano. The main dining room seats 10
Featuring a dedicated crew and a wide range of onboard facilities, Athena is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 14 knots while her crew of 22, under the direction of Captain John Clark and Sailing Master Steve Hammond, ensure the needs of every guest are met.
The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an armada of water toys to provide endless hours of entertainment during any yacht charter. Onboard can be found wakeboards, kite-surfing equipment and a range of scuba diving gear.
