Finland-based shipyard Nautor’s Swan launched its first ClubSwan 80 racing sailing yacht, My Song, last week in La Spezia, Italy. Built for a long-standing Nauta Design client of 35 years, the ClubSwan 80 welcomes the first collaboration between the Italian shipyard and Italian design studio, with the vessel also becoming the fifth vessel to be named after Pier Luigi Loro Piana’s famous My Song.

Nauta Design played an integral part in both the build process of My Song, coordinating the initial research of the ClubSwan 80 concept, as well as penning her tactical interior profile and cockpit design. My Song’s naval architecture and exterior design was penned by Juan Kouyoumdjian, and Persico Marine collaborated with Nautor’s Swan as a build partner.

‘The priority was speed, performance and fun, but the owner always likes to be able to use the yacht for a cruise with the family or with friends as well,’ commented Mario Pedol, Co-Founder of Nauta Design, ‘he wanted to have good performance upwind as well as downwind - a rocket in both directions. After all, in the first round the upwind mark has the advantage.’

Featuring exposed carbon fibre, ‘wafer-thin’ mahogany veneer and intelligent lighting, the first ClubSwan 80 will become not only an impressive racing yacht, but will boast a stylish cruising interior: created to enhance racing capabilities as well as providing a comfortable, sporty sailing vessel for family use.

‘Mahogany veneer is used sparingly around spotlights and in strips throughout the accommodation to provide a touch of elegance, and a welcome gleam that contrasts with the carbon fibre. Mahogany highlights are one of the client’s signatures,’ added Mario. ‘The boat also showcases laminated linen counters and tables – where flax fibres are laminated into resin.’

Creating a racing-savvy interior was essential for My Song. The solutions designed by Nauta include innovative lightweight furniture and fittings such as a gimbled oven, carbon-fibre toilets, and aircon system which can all be detached and taken ashore during racing. A king sized bed in the master cabin can convert to a twin, and can also be removed for racing benefits. The salon bench seats are the only feature to be built in, but serve as a structural addition.

Martino Majno, Sales and Project Manager of My Song, commented: ‘lighting was also a massive topic on this boat. Being a black hull, we’ve really played with three separate levels of lighting, starting with those needed just for racing, with discrete red lighting for night racing. For cruising, there are longitudinal indirect rope lights.’

With key design qualities established by Nauta, Persico Marine undertook the build of the technologically advanced carbon fibre hull and structure that was engineered by New Zealand-based engineering consultants Pure Design & Engineering.

Nautor’s Swan has now successfully completed the ClubSwan Yachts range with the launch of the first unit in its newest model, aimed at being a ‘fast, fun and innovative’ range.

My Song will debut this September at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup racecourse in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy. She will be available for visits at the Monaco Yacht Show later that month.
