Arnold & Son Unveils Two New Perpetual Moon 41.5 Editions

By Emily Dawkins

Luxury Swiss watchmaker Arnold & Son has revealed two new Perpetual Moon 41.5 wristwatches: the Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold and the limited edition Perpetual Moon 41.5 Platinum.

Inspired by the astronomical moon phases, Arnold & Son’s latest Perpetual Moon 41.5 wristwatches showcase the brand's innovative, creative nature, as well as showcasing its recent developments in the timepiece fields of cases, dials and finishes.

Adding to its existing Perpetual Moon Collection, which features three other timepieces all similarly adorned with ‘giant moons’, Arnold & Son’s two new variations certainly stand out from the rest.

With redesigned cases now presenting simplified lugs, tauter internal plunging bars and reduced bezel widths, the sleek pair stand 0.5mm smaller than their predecessors at 41.5mm; incredibly without any compromise to the size of their stand-out dial.

In both interpretations, their eye-catching dials present a unique new lacquered ‘stellar rays’ motif, that references the astronomical motivation behind the designs. According to the watchmaker, the unique finish has been created through skilful irregular engraving, and boasts, ‘several depths and widths of rays’, which, ‘coexist and follow on from one another, creating their own rhythm, and each generating a fluctuating interplay of light and a depth obtained by applying several layers of transparent lacquer.’ The 18-carat red gold model is paired with a luxurious, deep blue dial, embellished with gold hands and hour markers, whilst the 950 platinum model is combined with a soft salmon pink colour and matching platinum decorations.

The stunning, and most notable, feature of the two new designs is the iconic ‘giant moon’. Created with a white mother-of-pearl disk, the moon has been hand-painted with realistic shadows, and enhanced through a luminescent material that shines intensely in the dark. On both editions, the moon is set in front of a navy 'sky', and surrounded by the renowned navigator constellations of the Big Dipper and Cassiopeia: a homage to the late British watchmaker John Arnold of Arnold & Son, who specified in making naval chronometers.

Offering 90 hours of power reserve, the new timepieces boast meticulously handcrafted calibres built entirely in Arnold & Son's manufacturing headquarters in La Chaux-de-Fonds. The pair have a thickness of 11.30 mm, with a domed sapphire crystal and case back, and water resistance of up to 30m. Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold will be joining Arnold & Son’s permanent collection, whilst Perpetual Moon 41.5 Platinum is a limited edition model, with only 28 wristwatches available.

Labelled by the company as the, ‘most British of Swiss brands’ due to its rich British heritage, Arnold & Son has created a completely unique new Perpetual model that inevitably stands out from the crowd.
