German luxury carmaker Audi has confirmed its plans to unveil a new electric concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show later this month.

Audi’s first fully electric SUV, the e-tron quattro concept will be sized between the brand’s smaller Q5 and mid-size Q7 and demonstrates the brand’s ambitions to challenge Tesla in the burgeoning electric luxury market.

The e-tron quattro is designed to reduce drag with an entirely closed aerodynamically optimized underbody, enabling a low coefficient of drag of 0.25, representing a record for the SUV segment according to its makers.

It will utilize lithium-ion batteries that will deliver a range of 310 miles on a single charge. The batteries will be positioned below the passenger compartment, in between the front and rear axles, helping lower the car’s centre of gravity to enhance performance.

The car will house a total of three electric motors, one on the front axle and two on the rear.

The Frankfurt Motor Show takes place 17 – 27 September.
