BaselWorld, one of the most prestigious watch and jewellery shows on the calendar, is preparing for its 2011 event, with more than 1,800 exhibitors and 100,000 industry professionals expected to attend.

The trade fair, which takes place between 24-31 March at the Basel Exhibition Centre, attracts the word’s most eminent watch and jewellery brands, as well as diamond, precious-stone and pearl suppliers.

Organisers have attempted to expand the show’s communication channels this year by including social media websites Facebook and Twitter.

It is hoped that the social media tools will allow BaselWorld’s guests to engage in direct communication with the show.

“The latest information on the setting up of the show will be included in the profile contents, together with all the news on the world’s most important event for the watch and jewellery industry,” MCH Swiss Exhibition said in a statement.

Amongst the stand-out products on show this year will be a diamond encrusted Blackberry phone. IceLink, the Geneva-based Gemwatchmaker, have customized the phone complete with 6 carats of black diamonds. Limited to just 16 pieces, it is priced at $15,000.

The history of BaselWorld dates back to 1917. The show is designed to allow industry leaders to discover new innovations, keep abreast of trends and forge personal contacts in an exclusive business atmosphere.
