Blancpain Creates Limited Edition ‘Ocean Commitment’ Watch

By Paul Joseph

Swiss luxury watch brand Blancpain has created the first in a series of special edition timepieces to help raise money for oceanic environmental causes.

The Ocean Commitment Bathyscaphe Chronographe Flyback is limited to just 250 pieces, with Blancpain pledging to donate €1,000 from the sale of each piece to various initiatives.

Additionally, each purchaser of the watch will be automatically enrolled to join Blancpain’s ‘Ocean Commitment Circle’, entitling them to special advantages including access to Blancpain’s partners, exclusive information through the member’s area of Blancpain’s new Ocean Commitment website, and private invitations to scientific expedition report presentations as well as documentary film premieres.

The Bathyscaphe Chronographe houses Blancpain’s latest in-house movement, the F385, an entirely new column wheel controlled flyback chronograph movement which runs at the high frequency of 5 HZ – 36'000vph.

Notable design features include a grey ceramic case with a ceramic crown and ceramic chronograph pushers and a unidirectional blue ceramic rotating bezel marked with liquid metal indexes.

The blue colour theme is carried over to the dial, which offers three subdials for the chronograph counters and small seconds display. On the back of the watch, the movement and winding rotor are visible through the clear case back. The winding rotor has been specially decorated for this limited series bearing the Ocean Commitment logo.

Founded by Jehan-Jaques Blancpain in Switzerland in 1735, Blancpain has for many years been a dedicated supporter of environmental initiatives to explore, preserve and protect the world’s oceans.
