US car maker Detroit Electric has unveiled a new, limited edition luxury sports car billed as the fastest all-electric production car in the world.

Limited to just 999 units, the SP:01 has a top speed of 155mph thanks in part to its carbon fibre, lightweight body. It can also go from 0 to 62mph time in 3.7 seconds.

Powered by a 37kWh battery that can be recharged in just over 4 hours, the car has a range of 190 miles and is entirely emissions-free.

The SP:01 is also decked out with an ‘infotainment’ system that can be controlled via a specially-designed smartphone App.

Talking about the new launch, Detroit Electric’s CEO and Chairman Albert Lam said: “The SP:01 will be exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced.

“The car will be an exciting and innovative product, displaying outstanding performance coupled with strong green credentials, and delivering an exhilarating driving experience.”

The SP:01 will be available for purchase by the end of August 2013, with prices starting at $135,000 (£88,837).
