GnG and Athem make a gilded world for accessories

By

All around the world companies are popping up who want to help you upgrade your plain-Jane accessories into a spectacular one-off creation: from gold to diamonds, these custom ateliers are re-writing the books on luxury.

Swiss designer and jeweller Gnalihs Athem is the uncrowned king of bling when it comes to appliances: his exceptional craftsmanship produces stunning works of art out of humble technology. Drenching a selection of phones, from the Nokia 8800 Carbon to the ubiquitous iPhone 3G, in diamonds obtained in accordance with the Kimberly Process and officially graded, Athem considers the purchase of one of his phones as an alternate way of investing in diamonds. Athem will reuse the diamonds off your old phone once it becomes obsolete and you need to upgrade. Additionally, the Swiss atelier will bejewel belts, watches, pens and create one-off pieces that are sure to impress.

Music lovers will want to get one of the special iPod's coming out of Norwegian jeweller Thomas Heyerdahl's workshop. Made of solid 18-carat white and pink gold and encrusted with 430 diamonds, this glittering music player is a showstopper. With an additional 118 diamonds in the headphones alone, Heyerdahl told the media he would not be making another one, but we're fairly confident he could be persuaded.
