Gucci Team up with Disney to Create Mickey Mouse-Inspired Handbag Collection

By Paul Joseph

In the year of its 90th anniversary, iconic cartoon character Mickey Mouse has been given the ultimate birthday honour by being rendered into the design of a luxury Gucci handbag.

Since making his debut in the 1928 short animated film, Steamboat Willie, the legendary mouse has continued to live on in the memories of kids and adults alike.

Now the Italian fashion label Gucci has taken the landmark 90th year as an opportunity to immortalise Micky in a beautiful new handbag collection.

Part of the marquee’s Spring/Summer 2019 collection, the bags are designed to look identical to the cartoon character. The exclusive bags feature a rendering of Micky Mouse’s head along with a handle placed across the character’s ears.

The bags first appeared at Gucci’s SS-19 show in Paris, where they were carried down the runway by catwalk models as accessories.

As well as the standard version, the bag also comes in an all-white avatar with featured elements in red and scribbles of a star and moon on Mickey’s Ears, an “x” over his nose and text running along his forehead.

There’s also an all-black version with red inscription, as well as additional bags with the character’s traditional colour palate.

This isn’t the first time Gucci has incorporated Disney characters in its collections. In Spring 2017, the brand released the Donald Duck capsule collection. Gucci also showed Snow White eating a poison apple during the spring 2018 line, and a pattern made up of the “Three Little Pigs” for its 2019 cruise show.

The Gucci X Walt Disney Mickey Mouse handbags are expected to hit stores early this year.
