Hermes Birkin Handbag Sells for World Record Price

By Paul Joseph

It seems that the Hermes Birkin’s capacity for breaking records knows no bounds. Last year the iconic handbag saw one of its number sell at auction for a world record $377,000 in Hong Kong, but now that eye-popping figure has been trumped.

Also at a sale in Hong Kong, a version of the bag that features ultra-rare Himalayan Niloticus Crocodile skin sold for $382,000 by an unidentified overseas buyer.

The Himalaya Croc bag has some high profile fans including Kim Kardashian and Victoria Beckham, and it is rumoured that only one or two such bags are produced each year.

The popularity of this bag at auction and the fact that it has set world records two years in a row, offer strong evidence of the fact that it is considered a shrewd investment.

The Birkin is made from crocodile leather which is dyed taupe at the edges and white in the centre, a colour scheme inspired by the snow-capped Himalayan mountains.

Founded in Paris in 1837, Hermes has grown to become one of the world’s most famous luxury labels.
