Hermès Handbag Sells for World Record $388k at Auction

A rare version of an iconic Hermès Birkin handbag recently sold for almost $400,000 at auction – a world record price for a handbag.

The sale took place at a Christie’s auction in Hong Kong and saw the Himalayan matte white, crocodile diamond Birkin come under fierce bidding before fetching the record price.

The bag gets its name from the smoky grey and pearly white hues that resemble the majestic, snow-capped Himalayas and this particular record-breaking version comes adorned with an 18-carat white gold and diamond.

Per Matt Rubinger, international director of handbags and accessories, said Christie’s, “The most valuable bags are the diamond pieces, and the top collector pieces are the ones from the Himalaya family."

It is not the first time a Birkin has fetched an eye-popping price at auction. Last year a Hermes Birkin handbag sold at another Christie’s sale in Hong Kong for $300,000.

One of the world’s most iconic fashion accessories, famous Birkin collectors include singer and fashion designer Victoria Beckham and Kim Kardashian.

Founded in Paris in 1837, Hermes has grown to become one of the world’s most famous luxury labels.
