Interview with John Christie, Vice President of HG Christie, The Bahamas

There are few people who would not be captivated by the idea of living in The Bahamas. With its beautiful turquoise waters, relaxed way of life and highly favourable tax system, not to mention its proximity to the US, many people choose to do just that.

But finding the right property for you is now always a walk in the park. Luckily, The Bahamas is home to a number of highly experienced real estate experts, many of whom are natives and know the country inside out.

During our visit to The Bahamas in July, we sat down with one of them, John Christie, Vice President of HG Christie, to find out more about buying property in one of the most idyllic locations on earth.

“The property market a few years ago was fairly slow but it’s definitely picking up,” he said. “Especially in the super high end market. It’s being rediscovered among high-net-worth individuals, especially for people who want to avoid taxes in their countries such as in Europe where they are putting taxes very, very high.”

He continued: “It’s a very good place to live, it’s a beautiful spot and why not? We have many people coming out, even people with young families and they’re saying, ‘wow, why didn’t we do this before?’ You have everything you want and really nothing you don’t want.

“I’m just back from the US and everywhere else there’s lots of rules, but in The Bahamas people let you be, so you have a greater sense of freedom. If you’re a celebrity, people don’t harass you, and everyone who lives here feels like a star anyway. They feel really comfortable here. It’s just a nice place to be.”
