IWC Joins Tech Revolution With Smart Strap Device

By Paul Joseph

The smartwatch revolution continues apace and the latest company to join the march is IWC Schaffhausen – but their concept comes with a twist.

Rather than tinkering with the legendary mechanics of their timepieces, the Swiss brand has created an innovative device that is embedded into the straps of its watches, allowing its users to track their activities and connect with other devices.

Called IWC Connect, the device means that watch owners will now longer have to wear separate fitness bands and trackers.

The device will initially be introduced for use with its iconic Big Pilot’s Watches, before being rolled out for other watches in the IWC stable

"This intelligent tool, which will be embedded in the straps of mechanical timepieces from IWC, is designed to give wearers control over certain devices connected to the Internet of Things and provide fully fledged activity tracking," a press release from IWC reads.

"The idea behind this new innovation is to enable owners of IWC timepieces to control their connected environment directly from the wrist while also maintaining the integrity of a handcrafted mechanical timepiece."

Details on IWC Connect, including pricing and availability, are yet to be announced.

Founded in 1868, IWC have grown to become one of the world’s most renowned luxury watch brands.
