IWC Launches Special Edition Timepiece for 2014 Volvo Ocean Race

Swiss watch brand IWC have created a special edition version of its Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph to mark the 2014 Volvo Ocean Race which began earlier this week in Alicante, Spain.

Limited to 1,000 pieces, the Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is dedicated to IWC’s ongoing role as Official Timekeeper and sponsor of the Volvo Ocean Race and – for the first time this year – the Abu Dhabi Racing Team.

The 45mm watch features a silver-plated dial and luminescent blued hands and indices – the only timepiece in IWC’s Portuguese stable to do so – and a 360-degree rotor modelled on a ship’s wheel.

An IWC-manufactured 89361-calibre movement, billed as one of the most modern and robust chronograph movements available, comes with a flyback function and aggregate timing of up to 12 hours, shown by an analogue display with two hands in a subdial.

“We’re dedicating this watch to the teams’ sporting spirit and their commitment to extreme racing,” said Georges Kern, CEO of IWC.

Other notable features include crown protection, water-resistance to 6 bar and a black rubber strap with an alligator leather inlay.

The tradition behind the IWC Portuguese watch family stretches back to the precision nautical instruments used by seafarers to discover the world. According to IWC, this latest model is the sportiest ever to emerge in the history of the family.
