Macallan Whiskey Sells for World Record** $1.9m **at Auction

A rare 60-year old Macallan Whiskey has fetched $1.9 million at auction, making it the most expensive spirit to ever go under the hammer.

The Macallan 60-Year-Old 1926 was sold at a Sotheby’s auction despite conservative pre-sale estimates of more than half that figure.

Dubbed the “holy grail” of whisky, it was part of a 178 bottle collection of Macallan’s Fine and Rare series spanning from 1926 to 1991. To put the price into context, the 700 ml bottle contains about 45 pours of 15 ml each, equating  to $42,000 a pour.

According to Macallan, the whisky has a nose of “rich dark dried fruits – raisins, dates and prunes with woody spices like clove and treacle toffee,” a palate of “robust resinous wood, sweetened with medium treacle toffee and rich dried fruits,” and a finish of “drying wood with dark dried fruits and treacle toffee”.

As well as the 1926 Macallan, the auction also featured more than 460 bottles of Scotch from the private collection of a connoisseur.

Last year a unique, hand-painted bottle of Macallan 1926 whiskey sold for a world record-breaking price of $1.5 million at Christie’s Wine and Spirits auction in London.

Based in Scotland since 1824, The Macallan Estate has a global reputation as one of the world’s finest distillers of single malt whisky.
