By Paul Joseph

German luxury car giants Mercedes-Benz have launched what is billed as one of the world’s most economical luxury-class hybrids.

Available in both saloon and estate, the new E300 BlueTec Hybrid combines the power of a 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine developing 204 bhp with the energy of a 20 kW electric motor.

It is said to deliver fuel consumption of just 4.2-litres of diesel per 100km and low emissions of just 109g CO2/km.

Powered and charged by its own motion, the car is unrestricted in terms of driving distance and does not require any external charging points.

An official price will be announced closer to the launch date, which is expected at the start of 2013.
