Orka Fine Arts – The Art of Superyachts
Tom Liesegang of Orka Fine Arts creates unique pieces of art for brand-new superyachts; presenting fantastic works to the owners and captains of some of the world’s finest luxury yachts.
Having recently delivered his latest commissioned work to the recent Oceanco project, 7seas, founder of Orka Fine Arts, Tom Liesegang, is proud of his work. Using maps, coordinates, line drawings and blueprints to create an “intimate depiction of the yacht”, Liesegang produces unique work which attempts to redefine the traditional defitintion of maritime art.
Reacting against the 19th century Romantic Movement, Liesegang's work takes some of the fundamental elements of a yachts construction, such as aluminum, teak, and glass in an effort to re-define maritime art and take it into the 21st century.
“Rightly seen,” says Liesegang, “a ship’s line drawings, construction blueprints, stats and specifications, and the complex technology they represent, are works of art in their own right – creations that I use to represent, redefine and re-imagine a new way of seeing marine art.”
Founded in Amsterdam in 2004, Orka Fine Arts has introduced works of art to superyachts from Blohm + Voss, Heesen and Oceanco and is currently working on more – making Orka Fine Arts a company in high demand by the superyacht industry.
Tom Liesegang’s latest project with Dutch shipyard Oceanco culminated in a printing with indelible inks on Plexiglas, creating a third dimension to the composition; allowing the viewer to see through the glass to the work below. Liesegang comments, “The possibilities are endless. Working with progressive companies like Oceanco allows me to further develop my work. They’re open to new ideas.”
Sara Gioanola, press office manager of Heesen Yachts said, “What I enjoy about working with Orka, is that it brings all of our divergent departments together creatively. Each department has a hand in the creation of the work. The welding department cuts the aluminium, our interior department mills the frame, and our design team decide on the line drawings. In the end, we feel we’ve not only built a great ship, but we’ve presented something special for the owner, personally, that reflects all our appreciation.”
By combining classic methods of art with 20th Century print techniques and unusual subject materials such as aluminium and Plexiglas, Tom Liesegang has presented new and highly luxurious yachts with original works of art which encapsulates the unique nature of superyacht construction itself.
