Pair of 'Historic Competition' Ferraris
RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to release the complete digital catalogue for its flagship auction in Monterey California. The auction features 159 of the world’s most stunning examples spanning from pre-war classics to modern supercars, set to cross the block 12-14 August, during Monterey Car Week.
Joining the already impressive Monterey line up is a 1962 Ferrari 268 SP. It is the third of only six examples produced and one of just two originally equipped with a rare Ferrari V-8; only four such engines were ever built. This stunning example was integral to the evolution of the Ferrari P-car series and testing at the Le Mans trials in 1962. It was entered by NART at the Bahamas Speed Weeks from late-1962 through 1963 and driven to the 1964 SCCA Class D Modified Championship. This example boasts associations with legendary drivers such as Lorenzo Bandini, Harry Heuer, Olivier Gendebien, Ricardo Rodriguez, and has had only two private owners since 1969. Beautifully restored and displayed at major events, this technically ground-breaking and stylish 268 SP would crown any collection.
Another Ferrari to highlight the lineup is a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB Competizione. The 11th of 12 examples built featuring a 250 LM-type dry-sump, Tipo 213 competition engine, thin-gauge aluminum alloy coachwork, and use of lightweight components. It is a three-time 24 Hours of Le Mans entrant and class winner of the 1967 24 Hour of Le Mans, 1969 1000 KM Spa-Francorchamps, and 1969 500 KM of Imola. This Ferrari Classiche Red Book certified example is presently fitted with a six-carburetor high performance engine and is optimally prepared for rallies and racing; however, the correct original components are included and can be readily prepared for concours display as it was at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance in 2018. This stunning Ferrari invites the consideration of Ferrari collectors all over the world and is ready for any vintage competition the next owner has in mind.
The final and most highly developed iteration of Ferrari’s BB/LM racing platform, the 1981 Ferrari 512 BB/LM is the 10th of 16 “Series 3” examples produced by Ferrari and was delivered new to Luigi Chinetti’s North American Racing Team. This example was retained by NART until 1984, racing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans where it proved to be the fastest qualifier among the BB/LM entrants. It has been a competitive entry in many seasons of Shell Historic racing and benefits from a complete and meticulous restoration, finished in 2017, awarding it an invitation the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance in 2018. This well-documented 512 BB/LM would be an alluring acquisition for the most refined historic racers and offers an opportunity that cannot be replicated.
As the longest-standing tradition of the Monterey Car Week, RM Sotheby’s is thrilled to offer 159 spectacular cars at this years’ three-day auction event taking place at the Monterey Conference Centre, 12-14 August.
