Paul Chevalier on Another Outstanding Year for Chateau d’Esclans

By Paul Joseph

French winery Chateau d’Esclans is now a regular fixture at some of the world’s most luxurious events and well established as one of the world’s most renowned makers of rose wine.

Recently the company was in attendance for Superyachts.com’s lavish gathering at the Regalia residence in Sunny Isles, where many of Miami’s most prestigious names came to marvel at one of the most stunning real estate developments in the region.

Before the event, where Chateau offered guests a wine tasting experience, we sat down with Paul Chevalier to discuss the brand’s latest news, including memories of another outstanding year.

“We’ve had one of the better years in the last ten years, very consistent sunshine throughout the summer,” he began by telling us. “We started picking around the first week of September, and the wines have been showing good since they’ve been in the vat.

“We bottled the new vintage of Whispering Angel just before Christmas, and as we’re sitting here today, we have the new wine in the US.”

So what would he say has been the keys to the company’s success in recent years, as it has spread its fragrant wings across the world?

“Our first vintage was 2006 and we had this vocation of creating great rose, but also educating,” he said, “and we were spending a lot of time not just in the US but all around the world, doing tastings and trainings and sharing our passion for rose.”

And what specifically is it, we asked him, that makes the roses from Provence so special?

“I think it’s a combination of things,” he explained. “Number one, we’re in a specific climate, the Mediterranean, which is along the coast so it’s quite consistent versus other areas in France such as Bordeaux which usually gets a lot of rain.

“And also we’re using a very special grape which is Grenache. You can make rose from many types of red grapes, but the best result, the most elegant wine is from Grenache. And Grenache is the grape of Provence.”
