The latest to do so is iconic Italian design house Pininfarina SpA, designers of some of the most famous and beautiful Ferraris ever created over the decades.
After showcasing several concept electric vehicles at this year’s Geneva Motor Show, the design firm, acquired by Indian brand Mahindra & Mahindra a handful of years ago, has now confirmed it will make its own luxury electric cars, starting with an electric hypercar codenamed PF-Zero.
Headquartered in Europe, a new arm of the business called Automobili Pininfarina will design, engineer and manufacture luxury electric vehicles. The company will use Pininfarina’s years of experience in designing cars as well as the knowledge Mahindra & Mahindrahas gained from its experience in the Formula E championship
Paolo Pininfarina, grandson of Pininfarina founder Battista Farina and Pininfarina SpA chairman, said in a statement, “This project helps me and my family to realize my grandfather’s dream of seeing outstanding innovative cars solely branded Pininfarina on the roads.”
The first Pininfarina model, an electric hypercar, is scheduled to arrive in 2020. According to industry insiders, the all-electric hypercar will use modular underpinnings co-developed by Rimac and Mahindra’s Formula E Team.
It is also rumoured to come with enough power to compete with the 1,479 hp of the Bugatti Chiron. PF-Zero will be priced close to $2.5 million and will have a zero to 60mph time of 2 seconds.
Founded by Battista Pininfarina in 1930, Pininfarina has grown to become one of the world’s most renowned car design companies.
