Something to Write Home About: The $18k Pen Filled with Cognac

By Paul Joseph

What qualities do you look for in a luxury pen? Most of us would restrict our preferences to aesthetic and design attributes, or perhaps desiring a pleasing weight that feels secure in the hand.

Montegrappa, however, have other ideas. The Italian luxury brand have teamed up with Polish company Wealth Solutions to create a lavish, limited edition pen that comes pre-filled with a drop of a 275-year-old rare cognac.

Called the Gautier cognac fountain pen, it holds a drop of the smooth spirit in a capsule on the cap and is available in both gold and silver editions. The cognac was secured by Wealth Solutions in a liquor auction organised by Bonhams Fine Art Auctioneers & Valuers in New York.

Other notable features of the pen include a body and a cap made from pure oak wood and intricately decorated with grapevine motifs.

Only 100 sterling silver and 10 gold pieces each have been manufactured, with the gold version priced at $17,712 and the silver version coming in at a slightly more affordable $5,904.

Montegrappa was founded in 1912 and achieved prominence in the 1930s due to the growing popularity of fountain pens. Today the company also produces watches, cufflinks, pockets of leather, fragrances and other accessories.
