Sophie Matisse chess sets challenge the intellect

Adding an artistic flair to the strategic game of chess is Sophie Matisse, the great-grand daughter of world-famous painter Henri Matisse.

Painted in classic Matisse style, the art works seek to challenge the intellect while at the same time appearing genuinely pleasing to the senses.

Colours of red, blue, white, black, green and yellow create exotic shapes on the stunning chess boards, surrounded by a border and base of dark wood.

The truly limited edition chess sets will be showcased in an exhibition titled “The Art of the Game” to be displayed at the prestigious Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair (BTB) in San Diego.

With only five sets being painted, the game boards will be priced at US$16,000 each.

Sophie Matisse was born in 1965 in Boston. She is daughter to famous sculptor Paul Matisse and granddaughter to famous art dealer Pierre Matisse.

French artist Henri Matisse was became on one the most famous and well-respected artists of the 20th century with his fluid draughtsmanship and brilliant and original colour use.

The Beyond the Border International Contemporary Art Fair (BTB) is a 3-day contemporary art fair held in the luxurious Grand Del Mar that showcases over 500 works from jury-selected established and emerging contemporary artists from all over the world as featured in both national and international galleries.
