Steinway Partners with Hamburg Concert Hall on Exclusive Piano Series

By Paul Joseph

Legendary piano makers Steinway have teamed up with a brand new cultural centre in Hamburg, Germany to create a limited edition series of ivory instruments.

Christened as the Steinway & Sons Elbphilharmonie Limited Edition, the piano is inspired by the German city’s iconic architectural wonder, the Elbphilharmonie, and is available in a strictly limited run of 8 units.

The creations ape the building’s silhouette in the music stand that is made available either in a black gloss finish and in oak.

They also incorporate a unique interpretation of the Elbphilharmonie’s awe-inspiring external façade (made from 1,100 glass panels) on the inside of the lid in the form of an airbrushed depiction by artist Thorsten Boehm.

Other eye-catching features include the piano’s bench that is upholstered using the same material as seen in the seats of the venue’s Grand Hall and the noted SPIRO system that comes fitted in five pieces from the collection.

Each of the eight pianos in the series is sponsored by eight professional pianists (Lucas & Arthur Jussen, Igor Levit, Jan Lisiecki, Brad Mehldau, Daniil Trifonov, Mitsuko Uchida, Anna Vinnitskaya and Yuja Wang) who will also serve as the instrument’s ‘Godparents ‘.

Steinway will also donate €20,000 from each sale price to Stiftung Elbphilharmonie, a charitable foundation that promotes musical education programs across the globe.
