U-Boat Worx Discuss Underwater Exploration

By Paul Joseph

There was a time when underwater crafts were restricted to scientific and military purposes only, but in recent years the market for consumer-owned submersibles has exploded.

One company at the vanguard of this trend is Holland-based manufacturer U-Boat Worx, creators of some of the world’s most technologically advanced private submarines.

We sat down with Marlynda Elstgeest, U-Boat Worx’ Business Development Director, at the 2015 Monaco Yacht Show to find out more.

“These are specifically designed for private use,” she said. “We have a few different types and at this show we have launched a superyacht sub, which is specifically designed for the superyachts and megayachts.

“It is more than a toy, because it does go to 300 metres so it’s quite a serious toy. It starts at €1.5 million euros, that’s the type that goes to 100 metres, and then the 200 metre types will be around €1.7 million and 300 metres around €1.8 million.

“It’s quite compact, it’s 3,750kg. It accommodates three people – one pilot and two guests. [An owner] does have to have his pilot course training but we do that together with the owner if he wants to or if he assigned a captain.

“Currently we are actually quite busy, especially after this show, but usually it’s about 8-12 months when we can deliver it, depending on what kind of options or the type of submersible people would like.”
