By Paul Joseph

Swiss watchmakers Ulysse Nardin have become the first international luxury watch brand to open a store in Nigeria.

Located in the capital of Abuja on Gana Street Maitaa, the mono-brand boutique is spread over 72 square metres and is operated by Zakka, a company which holds the official agency for several luxury brands in Nigeria.

Other watch brands with an existing presence in Nigeria include Rolex, Cartier, Montblanc, Piaget, Chopard, Parmigiani, Tag Heuer and Zenith.

Many luxury industry experts view Nigeria as the next big frontier for luxury goods, owing to the country’s burgeoning middle-class. Lagos, the nation’s most populous city, is thought to be home over 10,000 millionaires and is predicted to have more than $25 billion annually in household spending available to it by 2020.

In March 2013, Germany luxury carmaker Porsche opened a new dealership on Victoria Island. the wealthiest district of Lagos, while last year Italian luxury fashion labels Ermeneglido Zegna and Hugo Boss opened franchise stores on the same strip.

Founded in Le Locle, Switzerland in 1846, Ulysse Nardin is one of the world’s most famous luxury watch brands.
