Zig-Zag Resort: A Coastal Masterpiece on the Albanian Riviera

By Nora Hart

A new vision for luxury tourism is emerging along the stunning coastline of Himarë, Albania, with the unveiling of the Zig-Zag Resort, a five-star destination designed by JA Joubert Architecture in collaboration with UNS Architects. Still in its concept phase, the 30,000m² resort will be a flagship of sustainable architecture and sensitive coastal development when completed in 2027.

Nestled into the slopes of the Albanian Riviera, the resort's signature zig-zag layout mirrors the contours of the land, ensuring minimal disruption to the terrain while granting every guest uninterrupted views of the Mediterranean Sea. This distinctive form not only defines the resort’s identity but embodies a deeper architectural philosophy: to respond to the land, not dominate it.

Zig-Zag’s commitment to sustainability is evident throughout its design. From passive cooling systems and strategic solar orientation to locally sourced Berat Stone that reinforces both regional character and energy efficiency, the project showcases a deep respect for the environment. A comprehensive rainwater management system, natural ventilation, and a seamless indoor-outdoor spatial flow further demonstrate how nature is woven into the guest experience.

Innovative mobility features, including a funicular system, pedestrian-friendly pathways, and intuitive drop-off points, offer effortless movement across the resort while preserving the integrity of the coastal site. At its heart lies a sea-water infinity pool that visually merges with the horizon, alongside private beach access that invites guests to engage directly with the unspoilt coastline.

Zig-Zag Resort is more than a hotel; it’s a new standard for environmentally responsible luxury in the Mediterranean. By seamlessly integrating architecture with the natural environment and prioritising ecological integrity at every level, the resort exemplifies how design can enhance, rather than compete with, the beauty of the Albanian coastline.
