The Bahraini chain of islands in the Arabian Gulf is set to become home to what is being billed as the world’s largest underwater theme park.

Build as part of a broad effort to drive tourism to the country, the theme park will serve as a desirable site for diving enthusiasts and will be one of the first to accommodate a giant-sized Boeing at the surface.

Scheduled to open next summer, the park will span an area of more than 100,000 square meters, with the flagship attraction a 70-metre decommissioned Boeing 747 aircraft, the largest of its kind ever to be submerged underwater.

The diving area will also feature a traditional Bahraini pearl merchant’s house, artificial coral reefs and other figurines, each made from environmentally-friendly materials.

The entire project has been commissioned through a partnership with the Supreme Council for Environment, Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BREA) as well as various local private sector companies.

The park will also be dedicated to the preservation of marine life and will be a safe haven for coral reef growth.

Last year, the UAE announced plans to create a coral garden along the coast of Fujairah, a project that aims to make a Guinness Record for being in the largest of its kind in the world.
