New Providence / Nassau Luxury Yachting Guide

Capital of the Bahamas, the city of Nassau on New Providence Island boasts a rich Colonial history. Home to impressive fortresses and pristine Victorian homes complete with picturesque English gardens, the historical perspective of Nassau provides a snapshot of life in the Caribbean 100 years ago.

For yacht charterers and owners, the island is often their first port of call thanks to its excellent links to the US mainland (just a 30-minute scheduled or private charter flight away) and the presence of state-of-the-art marinas at The Albany Resort and Atlantis Paradise Island. It is also a convenient gateway to many of the Bahamas’ highly popular Out Islands.

Those who do come by sea have plenty of reason to venture onto land to enjoy the island’s array of attractions, including stunning beaches, international shopping opportunities, casinos and sports facilities. World class golf courses, at Albany, the vast Baha Mar development and the Only & Only Ocean Club on Paradise Island, also help raise the tone.

Comprising four hotels, 200,000 square feet of convention space, an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course and a casino, Baha Mar dwarfs anything else on the island. The Albany Resort is a more serene and secluded offering and attracts renowned sportspeople thanks to its privacy and top-class fitness and recuperation centre. For those considering laying down roots, both are home to private residences for sale.

The Only & Only Ocean Club, meanwhile, is an alluring beachfront hideaway and a playground for golf, tennis, spa treatments, water sports and fine dining.

Shopping on New Providence takes several forms, from luxury boutiques to independent outlets offering locally sourced goods. The bulk of the high-end offerings such as Carlo Milano, which represents prestigious brands such as Hublot, Chopard, Versace, can be found on Paradise Island, but downtown Nassau also has its fair share, including John Bull, the Bahamas’ oldest and most famous premier luxury retailer.

For adventurous visitors, Nassau is one of the world’s best locations for shark diving. The tropical waters were even used as the setting for the film “Jaws: The Revenge”. Unlike the massive monsters featured in the movie however, Nassau is home to smaller, less aggressive sharks including tigers, hammerheads and most predominately, reef sharks.

Indeed, across the island watersports abound particularly brilliant windsurfing and parasailing, while deserted beaches are easily found along the southwest coast for a spot of respite.
