10 of the World’s Largest Explorer Yachts

By Nora Hart

Purpose-built for autonomy, endurance and global reach, explorer yachts sit at the pinnacle of modern yacht design. Combining ice-class hulls, long-range propulsion and vast onboard volume with five-star amenities, these vessels are engineered to reach the most remote corners of the planet in comfort. Here are ten of the largest explorer yachts in the world.

1. NORD, 142m

Delivered by Lürssen in 2021, NORD is a modern benchmark for ultra-large explorer yachts. Ice-strengthened and engineered for demanding environments, she pairs immense internal volume with refined contemporary design by Nuvolari Lenard. Dual helipads, expansive deck spaces and a full wellness complex support long-range, autonomous cruising without compromise.

2. SOLARIS, 139.7m

Built by Lloyd Werft and launched in 2021, SOLARIS merges expedition capability with strikingly modern design by Marc Newson. Her steel hull, substantial beam and enormous volume enable global cruising, while her bold exterior and futuristic interiors set her apart visually from more traditional explorers.

3. OCTOPUS, 126.2m

Few yachts have explorer credentials as established as OCTOPUS. Built by Lürssen and recently refitted, she boasts a range of around 8,000 nautical miles and an arsenal of expedition equipment, including dual helipads. Her combination of serious exploration capability and luxurious onboard facilities has made her one of the most iconic yachts ever built.

4. J7 EXPLORER, 120m

Delivered in 2022 by PT Bahtera Bahari, J7 EXPLORER is a modern displacement expedition yacht designed for extended voyages. Her steel construction, generous beam and above-average volume for her length make her particularly well suited to remote cruising, with a practical approach to exploration.

5. MULTIVERSE, 116m

Constructed in Norway by Kleven, MULTIVERSE is a purpose-built global explorer with a rugged exterior and an impressive range of up to 8,000 nautical miles. Designed in collaboration with Oscar Mike and RWD, she balances industrial expedition styling with refined interior spaces, capable of accommodating large guest numbers on extended journeys.

6. LUNA, 114.2m

A proven expedition yacht, LUNA was delivered by Lloyd Werft in 2010 and later refitted to enhance her already formidable capabilities. Diesel-electric propulsion, ice-class features and twin helipads underpin her explorer pedigree, while her relatively high speeds for an expedition yacht allow for efficient long-distance cruising.

7. NAUSICCAÄ, 114.2m

Lürssen’s NAUSICCAÄ represents a forward-looking evolution of the explorer yacht. Designed entirely by Marc Newson, she combines a sculptural, futuristic profile with advanced hybrid propulsion, including methanol-based fuel-cell technology, positioning her at the forefront of sustainable long-range yachting.

8. LE GRAND BLEU, 112.8m

Launched in 2000, LE GRAND BLEU is a classic explorer yacht with enduring appeal. Built in Germany with a robust steel hull and generous accommodation, she was designed for long-range cruising and remains one of the largest and most recognisable expedition yachts afloat.

9. RENAISSANCE, 111.8m

Delivered in 2023, RENAISSANCE is one of the largest expedition yachts ever built in Spain and represents Freire’s flagship explorer platform. With a steel hull, substantial beam and exceptional internal volume, she is engineered for true long-range autonomy. Her exterior and interior design by Bannenberg & Rowell bring a luxury superyacht sensibility to a vessel designed for global, extended cruising.

10. O3, 110m

Launched by Lürssen in 2025, O3 was originally developed as Project Shackleton with a strong emphasis on polar and high-latitude operation. Ice-strengthened and built for extreme endurance, she combines a robust explorer platform with refined modern styling following a major redesign by Espen Øino. Contemporary interiors by CG Design complete a yacht conceived for remote exploration without sacrificing modernity.

Together, these yachts illustrate how the explorer segment has expanded far beyond utilitarian origins. From research-led flagships to ultra-luxurious global cruisers, today’s largest explorer yachts combine scale, resilience and innovation on an extraordinary level.
