A Shipyard in Print: Feadship Joins Assouline’s Ultimate Collection

By Sophia Spanton

In an industry defined by scale, spectacle and steel, it is rare to see a shipyard distilled into paper. With the publication of Feadship by Assouline, the Dutch builder steps into a different kind of permanence. Titled Feadship, the handcrafted publication joins Assouline’s prestigious Ultimate Collection series, offering an intimate and meticulously curated insight into one of the most discreet and revered names in custom yacht building.

Rooted in a shipbuilding lineage that traces back to 1849, and building entirely custom superyachts under the Feadship name since 1949, the Dutch yard has long operated with an ethos defined by privacy, precision and a deeply personal approach to creation. Unlike many industry publications, this book does not centre on individual yachts or celebrated launches. Instead, it documents something arguably more compelling: a philosophy.

Drawing from Feadship’s private archives, the 220-page volume explores the processes, people and principles that underpin each project, from the first pencil sketch to final delivery.

Jan-Bart Verkuyl, Director of Feadship and CEO of Royal Van Lent Shipyard, explains:
'This publication is not about celebrating individual yachts, but about documenting a way of working that has been shaped over generations. By opening our archives, we wanted to provide an honest and carefully curated view of what it takes to create a Feadship, from the first pencil line to delivery.'

Through previously unseen imagery and original archival material, the book examines the scale of collaboration and technical ingenuity required to realise yachts that are, by definition, without precedent. Each Feadship is conceived entirely around its owner, an approach that has given rise to the oft-repeated phrase: There are yachts, and there are Feadships.

That distinction is woven throughout the publication, reflecting a world where advanced naval architecture, complex engineering and highly individual onboard environments converge. It is less a catalogue of projects and more a portrait of a culture shaped over decades and refined through experience.

The choice of Assouline’s Ultimate Collection format feels particularly fitting. Measuring an impressive 40.5 x 48 cm, the leather-bound volume is presented in a matching leather clamshell case, finished with a premium metal Feadship logo plate. Assouline titles are already a familiar presence on board many superyachts; a dedicated Feadship edition feels like a natural evolution.

'Assouline books are part of life on board many Feadships. Creating a dedicated Feadship volume together felt like a natural step. The result is a publication that reflects our heritage, our values and the collaborative culture behind every Feadship,' says Farouk Nefzi, Chief Marketing Officer at Feadship.

Authored by John Weich; writer, editor and creative director, the volume brings narrative depth to the imagery. Weich has previously written for PILOT and other Feadship publications, and narrated the Feadship Uncovered podcast series, making him a natural voice for this archival exploration.
