Amico & Co Shipyard One Step Closer to Cleaner Refits

By Emily Dawkins

Genoese refit and service shipyard Amico & Co has announced that is has made a significant monetary investment towards the clean manufacturing and environmental sustainability of both its own services, and the city of Genoa. The yard has now successfully completed the installation of an extensive state-of-the-art photovoltaic system that, with renewable energy, will now cover an impressive 53% of its annual energy needs for both the shipyard itself, and the production activities of its nearby berthing facilities of the Waterfront Marina.

As a global leader in the refit and repair of some of the world’s largest superyachts, Amico & Co is setting the standard for shipyards around the world. With the installation of this brand new system, which is just one step within a multiple-level approach towards a cleaner production line, the Genoese yard will incredibly be able to power over half of its energy consumption entirely through renewable sources.

The newly commissioned on-site system is the largest privately built solar ‘array’ in a port in Italy, and marks a major milestone for Amico & Co as a significant investment of almost one million euros. The expansive system spans over 4,300 square metres and boasts an impressive 1,782 solar panels; all strategically placed on the roofs of the shipyard hangars, offices, and marina buildings.

‘With some pride we can say that since the very start of our activities, with greater intensity since the early 2000s, we have made investments that have gone in the direction of what we now call sustainability’, shared Alberto Amico, President of Amico & Co Spa. ‘Our strategy was and is the implementation of work process efficiency, particularly through covered and permanent warehouses and other facility technologies, which guarantee 73% consumption savings when compared to any temporary facility.’

This sizeable investment into sustainable practices reinforces Amico & Co’s dedication to clean manufacturing, as well as its efforts in contributing to Genoa’s economic ecosystem, as it becomes increasingly recognised as a Mediterranean capital for superyachts.

This latest initiative builds upon a series of strategies implemented by Amico & Co from its very start, with each one aimed at minimising emissions and mitigating the environmental impact of its operations. In 2007 and 2009, the yard electrified its shipyard docks to eliminate emissions associated with vessel activities, and later in 2010, built dry docks to efficiently isolate vessels during repair works. In 2019, Amico & Co inaugurated its 'ShipLift', an innovative, fully-electrified haulage for vessels up to 95m. The more recent opening of Genoa’s Waterfront Marina in 2021 has also added to the beneficial reduced impact on the environment of superyachts visiting the area. As a popular yard completing over 130 projects every year, Amico & Co’s commitment to sustainable practices is certainly significant in the industry.

The yard has also revealed that later this month it will publish its first Sustainability Report according to the GRI guidelines, providing a transparent picture of the company's performance and future goals.
