An Antarctic Adventure: Pushing the Boundaries of Superyacht Design

By Frances Flannagan

A design studio renowned for pushing the boundaries of design, Tony Castro Yacht Design has now elevated its expertise even further as its founder, Tony Castro, embarked on a daring expedition to the Southern Hemisphere. Undertaking this exciting adventure is purely a highlight of the designer’s dedication to going one step further when it comes to yacht design, as the founder and his team works to deliver the most capable superyachts possible.

World-renowned yacht designer Tony Castro has been creating exceptional designs for over forty five years, spanning a diverse range of both motor and sailing vessels. The design firm has often been recognised for its innovative nature, consistently seen to be at the forefront of trends, introducing features that are now commonplace on superyachts, such balconies, beach clubs and reverse bows. As a result, the firm has won many Innovation awards over the years.

The studio’s passion for creating innovative designs with proven expertise has never faltered, resulting in Tony Castro embarking on an expedition to Antarctica in January 2023 to witness first-hand the most challenging aspects of superyacht design. The studio has been designing its Pelagic Yachts to operate in this unforgiving region for many years at the initial request of a celebrated yacht skipper client, who has dedicated his energy to running several boats in the Southern Hemisphere for scientists and Netflix production teams alike. This expedition was undertaken to elevate not only the Pelagic Yachts’ design, but the entirety of Tony Castro’s portfolio.

Over the course of this once-in-a-lifetime expedition, Tony Castro found himself in a plethora of challenging situations that has inspired an even more dynamic approach to yacht design. He recognised the demanding nature of the environment, and therefore the requirement of capabilities that are not usual to typical pleasure boats. Rescue is not always possible due to the distance and isolation of Antarctica, meaning that boats must be designed to avoid risk, be self-sufficient, as well as being easy to handle.

‘Designs must also consider how easy it will be to maintain, fix and live onboard whilst coping with the worst possible conditions,’ Tony Castro commented. ‘Think seventy knot winds in freezing temperatures.’

When asking the designer about his daring adventure, Castro provided Superyachts.com with a quote from Albert Einstein which encompasses the crux of design: ‘The only source of knowledge is experience.’ This trip to Antarctica has served many purposes for the design studio, one of which being the benefit to the design of the Pelagic Yachts, allowing Castro to foresee risks and challenges and adjust design ideas accordingly. Experiencing the demands of Antarctica has elevated concepts, resulting in boats perfectly designed and suitable for voyages in remote areas with extreme weather conditions. Going to the Southern Hemisphere proved to Castro that experience is key to the success of such a yacht, strengthening the studio’s approach to design and showcasing its commitment to high-quality vessels.

For Tony Castro Yacht Design, it is paramount that each and every vessel is supported by good engineering, featuring well designed layouts that offer safety, comfort and style. This Antarctic adventure has proved to clients that the design firm will go to extreme lengths to execute the most capable designs possible, contributing to the wealth of experience and knowledge that sets Tony Castro apart from other designers.

Tony Castro concluded: ‘At Tony Castro Yachts, we design vessels that are successful at what they were intended for and not merely to adorn the pages of magazines.’
