Superyachts are the perfect gateway to exploring the world’s most remote and adventurous destinations in luxurious style. Connecting guests with unique experience and enchanting natural and cultural encounters, this is the essence of yachting.

In Australia, these such opportunities are limitless. This Episode, we are joined by leading superyacht brokers and agents, as well as Captains and key Tourism stakeholders, to discover what awaits for those willing to venture off the beaten track.

“Australia is an island nation, we are surrounded by water and most of our population is a coastal population,”explains Phillipa Harrison, Managing Director of Tourism Australia. “So the waterways of Australia are important to our lifestyle, they offer incredible coastal landscapes that we love to share.”

The Australian cruising experience is not only about awe-inspiring landscapes and prolific wildlife, but connecting with a proud ancient culture.

“We are a land that has the oldest living culture through our First Nations people, and they have been looking after this land for over 60,000 years,” continues Phillipa Harrison. “We have a lot to learn from our First Nations people – when visitors come to Australia, we ask them to engage through tourism experiences or through life experiences, learn about our culture and the Australian land through their eyes.”

Joachim Howard, Managing Director of Ocean Alliance, see the cultural encounters as an enriching ingredient to superyacht itineraries in the country. “I think the Indigenous experiences add an element to the experiences in Australia that make it unique. I think the depth of those cultural experiences are really connected to Australia.

“Everywhere in Australia there is a connection with local Indigenous guides, and we can bring those experiences to guests.”

For those who want to experience something new and vastly different from the European Rivieras, Australia’s coastline is brimming with adventure. Nothing encapsulates the rugged, raw nature of Australia quite like the Kimberley region. Nestled in the Northwest, this remote wilderness offers a cruising experience like no other.

“I like to think that people who come through Broome and into the Kimberley are remembering why they bought a boat in the first place,” shares Chad Avenell, Managing Director of Marine Agents Australia.

“You buy a boat for adventure. You buy a boat for that extreme nature, to see where you can take it and have unique experiences. The Kimberley really presents itself to having an adventure.

“When you go to the Kimberley, it is what people think of Australia. There is nothing for a thousand miles, you can’t get there by road so the only way to get there is by boat of plane. It has everything that you’d think Australia has to offer.”

Marine Agents Australia recently helped 74.5m M/Y Lady E on a voyage through the Kimberley, and it is safe to say the trip was a memorable one. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” says James Kennedy, Captain of M/Y Lady E.

“Tall cliffs rising out of the sea that light up bright red in the sunset. Fishing, some of the best fishing I’ve ever seen in my life. Waterfalls, sharks, crocodiles. It’s a fantastic spot. I’ve got some great memories from the Kimberley.”

Elsewhere in Australia, the Northern Territory is perhaps best known as the home of the iconic Uluru monolith, however the capital of Darwin is a launchpad to many on-water adventures.

“It definitely gets more adventurous as you head up north,” comments Matt Stafford, Captain of M/Y Perle Bleue. “If you are really adventurous, you can go into areas like Arnhem Land where there is such arid red beauty. Then pop into Darwin and you’ve got the facilities to refuel, repair, rest, and also fly people in and out of international airports.

“And from there you can see the Northern Territory, do those trip inland that people here for longer term can spend months there.

“You’ve got to have that person who has the spirit to go a little bit further than the traditional charter. And you see a whole new area that really opens up and is just beautiful. God’s country they call it, and it really is.”

From the Top End down to Tasmania, adventure is endemic in Australia. Discover more about what awaits for superyachts and their guests in Australia by watching An Explorer’s Playground.
