An Insight into the Most Popular Charter Destinations of 2024

By Frances Flannagan

As we reflect upon what has been a wonderful 2024, Superyachts.com spoke with Sophie Spain, Charter Manager at Burgess, to gain an exclusive insight into the most popular charter destinations of this year. She uncovers which locations have taken top spot, some up-and-coming destinations and the reasons why these superyacht hotspots attract the most clientele.

1. Thank you so much for taking part in this interview! Firstly, please can you give me an insight into your role at Burgess?

Sophie Spain: I’m a Charter Broker at Burgess, meaning that I act on behalf of the clients to help source the best yacht for their needs. I’ll assist them in negotiating the best rate, execute the contact, and from there will arrange all aspects of their trip.

2. As the year draws to a close, what have been the most popular charter destinations of 2024?

Without any surprise, the West Mediterranean wins favour by a considerable number of bookings. At just under a third of this count, the East Med is the second most favoured cruising area, Greece being the most popular. The Caribbean follows closely behind, but we are yet to see the season through so it is likely to match the East Med or perhaps exceed it in terms of number of charters booked for 2024.

Bookings to Croatia have also increased this year, as locally run yachts in the area are able to accommodate over 12 guests. This is particularly attractive to large groups and families, as these offerings prove to be excellent value, whilst also offering a really great hospitable charter experience with all the watersports and amenities that guests desire!

3. Why do you think these destinations have been popular with charter guests? What do they offer that other locations are perhaps lacking?

It’s the combination of the fact that there does seem to be a higher calibre and inventory of new-build yachts in these areas, licensed for these destinations. These areas also offer a varied charter experience: a beautiful blend of nature, glamour and fine-dining opportunities. Other areas are catching up, but the volume of yachts still doesn’t quite match the distinctive allure of the West Med.

4. Have these destinations differed from previous years? If so, why do you think this is the case?

Whilst the West Med once again takes top charter spot, the East Med is undoubtedly catching up!

5. Are there any standout members of Burgess’ fleet that are specifically suited to these destinations?

We have a fleet of over a hundred yachts, and the vast majority do cruise the Mediterranean in the summer. So for this reason, all of our fleet to be honest! We are able to provide clients with stunning charters to this superyacht hotspot, adapting to their preferences and requests to deliver the ultimate charter experience.
