Bernard Gallay Announces Sale of 31.8m ASAHI

By Emily Dawkins

French brokerage firm Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage (BGYB), has announced the sale of the 31.8m aluminium sailing yacht ASAHI. Delivered in 1998 by French shipyard Trehard, and recently undergoing an extensive refit in 2020, the stunning sloop was sold for €2,450,000. BGYB represented both the buyer and the seller throughout the sale.

Standing at 31.8m in length, ASAHI is an incredible example of the meticulous craftsmanship of French shipyard Trehard and the impeccable architecture of Jacques Fauroux. Originally designed and built for an experienced yachtsman, the remarkable sloop sailing yacht was, ‘destined from the beginning to be a top-notch performer on the water and in the charter market’.

Featuring a sleek midnight black exterior and luxurious onboard accommodation and features, there is no wonder as to why ASAHI was snapped up on the market.

Reportedly the only sailing yacht with four lavish guest staterooms, accommodating eight, which can convert to one spacious master suite with a king bed and his and her bathrooms, ASAHI makes for incredible versatility. This innovative, one-of-a-kind feature allows her to cater to any size charter group: highlighting her first-class ability as an exquisite charter vessel.

Aside from her accommodation qualities, ASAHI also boasts a sizeable cockpit that is free of winches and lines, and offers the perfect place to relax or entertain whilst taking in the surrounding views. Inside, she features an open-plan main saloon adorned in warm woods and a calming neutral colour palette.

ASAHI’s crew quarters are also something of noting, as they boast one large, queen-bedded Captain's cabin, one double cabin and one twin-berthed cabin, all fitted to the same high standards seen elsewhere onboard.

Despite her age, the 31.8m vessel has seen the utmost care over the years from a number of different owners, and since 2010, her systems have been gradually wholly refurbished. 2019 saw a new engine fitted; in 2019 and 2020 new generators were installed; new sails were raised in 2016 and 2017, and the list continues.

In terms of her performance at sea, ASAHI has successfully achieved 15 knots reaching and 23 knots surfing downwind: yet another nod to her excellent build specifications. ASAHI has a 7.4m beam and a draft of 3.7m. Her cruising speed is 10 knots and she is classified to the Bureau Veritas Certification.

BGYB represented both the buyer and the seller during the sale of ASAHI, which took place in Genoa, Italy, with BGYB Sales and Charter Manager Nicolas Marchand finalising the deal. ASAHI was previously sold by BGYB in 2010 and 2019, with the previous owner choosing BGYB again to coordinate the sale.

Bernard Gallay, CEO of BGYB, commented on ASAHI’s longstanding history with the French brokerage firm: ‘It has been the third time we have sold ASAHI since 2010. Initially launched as Vaeria for an experienced French owner, she became Kalikonass 2 under the ownership of a US citizen. We then sold Kalikobass 2 in 2010 to a French owner who sailed her around the word and also put her on the charter market when not using her for himself. He renamed her Ocean’s Seven 2, who we sold in 2019 to an Italian gentleman who greatly renewed her and then intensively cruised her in the Med.

‘This last October 2022, we sold ASAHI to another French owner who intends to cruise her with his family and friends between the Med, Caribbean and further. Along the years, she has proven to be an exceptional sea-worthy and fast ocean-crossing sailing yacht as well as a very successful charter yacht.'

We would like to congratulate Bernard Gallay Yacht Brokerage and all those involved on this successful sale, and we are looking forward to seeing ASAHI cruise the world with her new owner for many years to come.

"Along the years, she [ASAHI] has proven to be an exceptional sea-worthy and fast ocean-crossing sailing yacht as well as a very successful charter yacht."
