Cannes Film Festival Wraps Up for 2026

The 79th Cannes Film Festival drew to a close this weekend, capping off 12 days of cinematic excellence, star-studded glamour, and unforgettable moments on the French Riviera. From May 12 to 23, the Palais des Festivals and the Croisette once again became the beating heart of international cinema

Under the presidency of acclaimed South Korean director Park Chan-wook, this year’s jury, which included Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Stellan Skarsgård, and Chloé Zhao, presided over a strong competition lineup heavy on auteur-driven stories. The festival opened with Pierre Salvadori’s La Vénus électrique (The Electric Kiss) and featured highly anticipated works including Pedro Almodóvar’s Bitter Christmas, Hirokazu Kore-eda’s AI-themed Sheep in the Box, Ryûsuke Hamaguchi’s All of a Sudden, Na Hong-jin’s Hope starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, and Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord, which earned strong audience reactions.

The red carpet delivered its usual glamour. Demi Moore turned heads in custom Jacquemus creations, while Ruth Negga impressed with versatile looks ranging from fringed Dior to sharp tuxedo suits. Other notable appearances included Sharon Stone, Heidi Klum, Léa Seydoux, Renate Reinsve, Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, and Sebastian Stan (who walked alongside his partner Annabelle Wallis). Honorary Palme d’Or recipients Peter Jackson, John Travolta (presenting his directorial debut Propeller One-Way Night Coach), and Barbra Streisand added a statement;

'I am deeply honored to receive the Honorary Palme d’or and had so been looking forward to celebrating the remarkable films of the 79th edition'

While Hollywood studio blockbusters were lighter this year, independent and international cinema shone brightly, with strong buzz around films exploring themes of technology, family, grief, and human connection. The Marché du Film facilitated key deals, reinforcing Cannes’ position as an essential industry marketplace.

As always, the superyacht presence was a defining element of the event’s ultra-exclusive side. The bay and nearby ports hosted an impressive fleet, with standout vessels including the 116m Multiverse, 82m Alfa Nero, 106.1m Amadea, 93m Lady S, and several other notable yachts visible from the Croisette. These floating palaces served as the ultimate backdrop for private parties, client meetings, and high-profile hospitality, underscoring the seamless blend of film, fashion, and luxury that makes Cannes unique.

As the curtains fall on the 2026 edition, the conversations sparked by this year’s films will undoubtedly carry into awards season. Cannes once again proved why it remains the world’s most prestigious film festival.

"'I want to extend my warmest congratulations to all of the filmmakers from around the world whose extraordinary talent and creative vision are being celebrated this year. My heartfelt thanks to the Festival, and to everyone who continues to support and champion the art of cinema'"
