Cecil Wright’s 3D Scanning: The Future of Superyacht Brokerage

By Nora Hart

While much of the superyacht world still leans on tradition, boutique brokerage Cecil Wright is embracing innovation. At the heart of their approach is advanced 3D scanning, technology that is not only modernising the buying experience but redefining how yachts are marketed and sold.

We’ve been working with this technology for a long time,’ says Henry Smith, Partner and Broker at Cecil Wright. ‘It’s all about giving clients the best possible tools to make informed decisions. For us, it complements the high level of personal service we’ve always prioritised.’

Their mantra, ‘fewer clients, better served,’ isn’t just a slogan but a commitment to providing tailored expertise. By integrating immersive tools like 3D scanning and VR into daily operations, they offer clients, many of whom value quality over size, a more transparent, efficient way to understand a yacht’s potential.

3D scanning is more than just a visual tool; it’s a meaningful part of the buying journey and a highly complementary counterpart to professional photography. ‘The difference between a polished photo and a 3D rendering is that you actually feel like you’re inside the yacht,’ says Smith. ‘That level of spatial awareness gives clients a real sense of comfort before they even step on board. Imagery inspires, but renderings inform, they’re complementary, and together they give our clients every advantage.’

This became especially apparent during COVID, when the team hosted virtual open days, allowing clients to explore their sales fleet as if walking the decks themselves. The results were clear: faster sales, fewer unnecessary visits, and a smoother experience overall.

In one memorable case, a client from the United States purchased a Feadship solely based on 3D scans and a virtual tour. ‘He was able to see every detail and understand the layout in a way that made the requirement for travel redundant,’ says Smith. ‘It’s a perfect example of how technology can simplify the process without compromising the integrity of the purchase.’

3D scanning is now integral to nearly every stage of the yacht lifecycle at Cecil Wright. Whether preparing a vessel for refit or conducting inspections, the technology delivers exceptional accuracy and speed. ‘We scan the yachts ourselves and have usable data within 12 hours,’ Smith notes. ‘It’s practical, efficient, and aligns with our promise to act quickly and transparently.’ As they evolve, scans can be used to virtually remove or add furniture, simulate layout changes, and develop CAD files for refits, without setting foot on board. For both buyers and the refit yards, this level of detail reduces cost, increases confidence, and supports faster, more informed decisions.
