Clean Marina Accreditation Reaffirms Rivergate Commitment

By George Bains

Brisbane’s Rivergate Marina & Shipyard has been accredited as an International Clean Marina for a fourth time, marking the business’ ongoing commitment to environmentally sustainable practices.

One of the Southern Hemispheres most encompassing service hubs for superyachts, Rivergate has been lauded for its exceptional project management and maintenance facilities – which are set to get a $200m AUD upgrade.

While delivering excellence in its yacht refit and maintenance projects, Rivergate has also remain consistent in its commitment to supporting sustainable and environmentally conscious practices.

The International Clean Marina program is an international voluntary accreditation program run by Marina Industries Australia. It encourages environmental compliance and use of best management practices for Australian and overseas marinas.

Rivergate Dockmaster, Sarah Toxward, shared her pride to see the team’s sustainability efforts recognised.

“I recently completed a Certificate IV in Environmental Management and Sustainability in late 2021, and have shared some of the knowledge I obtained and provided input into Rivergate’s overall environmental and sustainability strategies since I began my role as Dockmaster.”

As one of two dockmasters on deck, Sarah is responsible for the cleanliness of Rivergate’s marina. “As someone with a strong passion for both the maritime industry and encouraging a more sustainable work environment, I am really proud to work for an International Clean Marina.”

The goal of the Clean Marina Program is to reduce ‘non-point source pollution’ associated with boating and marina facilities, and to promote clean water, clean air and thriving marina industry businesses.

To receive a Level 3 International Clean Marina accreditation, trained and qualified Clean Marina Consultants carried out an independent audit of the site.

There are several sustainability risks associated with a publicly accessible marina with 24/7 vessel refuelling services, but Rivergate continues to both meet and exceed environmental legislation and expectations.

Rivergate’s commitment to sustainable ocean practices extends far beyond the marina and shipyard. The business is a proud supporter of Ocean Crusaders, a team of leading waterway cleaning specialists in southeast Queensland. Ocean Crusader’s crew members are made up of passionate volunteers who crusade oceans and waterways in South East Queensland to remove litter and debris that is harming our ecosystems.
