By Emily Dawkins

After great anticipation, the fourth episode of the documentary series 'Top 100: Building Green Giants' has now launched on Superyachts.com. In this brand-new episode, we hear from several leading shipyards on how they are implementing greener in-house practices within their yards to contribute to greener superyachts, a greener industry, and a greener planet.

Watch the brand-new episode ‘Building for the Future’ here.

'Building a superyacht often requires as much energy as the operation of the vessel itself.'

In conversation with some of the greenest superyacht shipyards in the world, we discuss their range of wide-stretching in-house initiatives that are contributing to more eco-conscious superyacht builds.

Combining people, planet and profit, representatives of the yards share how they are working to lower build emissions to reduce both their ecological footprint, and contribute to a low-carbon future, all whilst creating an owner’s dream in the process.

With an average construction period of up to four years, the lifespan of a superyacht stretches far longer than that of your average luxury purchase. Impacting a huge array of professions and tourism, as well as the global economy, it has become more important than ever to ensure that the lifecycle and construction of these monumental vessels are of a more sustainable nature. After all, 'sustainability is as much about the construction of the vessel as it is about the delivery and usage.'

Leading shipyards, Oceanco, Ferretti Group, Lurssen, and Feadship share with us how they have already implemented, and have future plans to implement, greener and more environmentally-conscious measures throughout their build processes.

With Feadship recently opening a new, sustainable yard in Amsterdam, alongside the likes of Lurssen, Ferretti Group and Oceanco implementing extensive green measures in production, the industry can rest assured that those at the heart of the yachting sector are working hard for an emission-free future.

‘We feel that sustainability has to be at the core of all business in the 21st century,' shared Georgina Menheneott, Regional Business Development at Burgess. 'Everyone is acutely aware that time is running out and it's only going to be by acting together that we can really make these changes happen, but once we lay the foundations and are confident in what we have started to build then that's when as an industry, we’ll really be able to move on together.'
