Everything We Know So Far About Lürssen’s 114m Project COSMOS
Lürssen’s groundbreaking 114.2-metre superyacht Project COSMOS is edging closer to delivery after successfully completing a comprehensive series of sea trials. Launched in August 2025 and due for handover in 2026, the yacht marks a major milestone for the shipyard as its first vessel equipped with methanol fuel-cell technology.
At the owner’s request, Project COSMOS incorporates two 500kW methanol fuel cells, a demanding engineering feat that enables the yacht to cruise at up to seven knots for around 1,000 nautical miles with markedly reduced emissions. As a prototype platform, she still carries her traditional diesel engines and generators but can remain at anchor with zero emissions for up to 15 days.
Commissioned for a Japanese owner, the six-deck superyacht features a distinctive, explorer-inspired profile by celebrated Australian industrial designer Marc Newson. Best known for his work on SOLARIS, Newson has given Project COSMOS a bold, fluid exterior distinguished by extensive black glazing and a remarkable rounded observation pod at the bow. The yacht’s most talked-about architectural feature is its glass-domed owner’s study, complete with a private sky terrace. To achieve its uninterrupted 360-degree vistas, Lürssen developed a bespoke method for bending large, thick glass sections without distortion.
The glass motif continues throughout the upper decks, with a continuous glazed band wrapping the cabin deck and a forward observation lounge tucked beneath the helipad. Aft, a glass-balustraded balcony looks down onto the expansive main deck. The yacht’s open aft deck centres around a swimming pool and Jacuzzi arrangement, flanked by generous seating. Further aft, a dry dock equipped with a sledge system allows for the deployment and retrieval of the yacht’s largest tender, a setup clearly designed with long-range exploration in mind.
Built to Ice Class 1D, Project COSMOS is engineered for a vast range of conditions, giving her the capability to explore all five major oceans and all seven continents. With an estimated internal volume of around 6,300 GT and an 18-metre beam, she sits among the largest yachts currently under construction worldwide.
As her final outfitting phase begins, excitement continues to build around Project COSMOS, a yacht that blends pioneering green propulsion, adventurous design and ambitious engineering into one of the most compelling large-yacht projects of the decade. Delivery is anticipated in 2026.
