Feadship’s BREAKTHROUGH Sets a New Sustainability Standard

Commissioned by a forward-thinking owner who sought fresh green technology, Feadship responded with a zero-diesel solution. This culminated in a complex fuel cell system powered by liquid hydrogen stored at an extraordinary -253°C, an engineering feat unprecedented in the luxury yacht sector.

Launched in 2024 under the name Project 821, BREAKTHROUGH is a bold step in Feadship’s pledge to deliver net-zero yachts by 2030. Her emission-free power allows for silent operation at anchor or low-speed cruising for up to a week using only green hydrogen. When required, hybrid MTU generators combusting HVO provide propulsion support, dramatically reducing emissions without sacrificing range or performance.

Feadship’s dedication extended beyond engineering. In collaboration with Lloyd’s Register and Edmiston, the project pioneered new maritime safety and regulatory frameworks for liquid hydrogen storage, laying the groundwork for future vessels. The successful liquid hydrogen bunkering in the Netherlands earlier this year marked a historic moment for European maritime infrastructure.

Designed inside and out by RWD, BREAKTHROUGH exudes understated luxury. A private four-deck owners’ retreat, 15 guest staterooms, and space for 48 crew are complemented by features such as a sea-view library, games niche, beach club, and multiple slide-out balconies that seamlessly connect the interior to the sea.

Despite her immense technological sophistication, BREAKTHROUGH retains a calm, coastal elegance. Her interiors are shaped by light neutrals, natural textures, and organic materials crafted into serene, contemporary spaces.
