First Look: 78m Custom Amels Superyacht Unveiled

By Freya Cottrell

For the first time since her arrival in the Amels and Damen Yachting shipyard, the 78m Custom Amels 78 superyacht has been unveiled in all her glory. The collaboration of naval architecture by Damen Yachting and exterior design by Espen Øino delighted the onlookers of the Dutch shipyard as the superyacht rolled out of the build shed.

The Custom Amels 78 was unveiled in Vlissingen, The Netherlands, ready to undergo a number of sea trials ahead of her delivery in 2022.  Her move outside follows the initial floating of the vessel which took place earlier this year; this exclusive event was attended by the Owner’s team, the Amels and Damen Yachting team and the project’s illustrious designers.

Once she is delivered in 2022, The Custom Amels 78 will be the largest superyacht by volume that Amels has built to date - a whooping 2885 GT. Her interior, designed by Zuretti Interior Designers features accommodation for 14 guests plus space for a 26 strong crew.

Andrew Tree of Superyacht Technical Services explains why the unveiling of a new vessel has such a large and emotional impact on those involved in the project: “The moment a project heads outside for the first time is always very special. It’s impossible not to be proud of reaching that moment and having the opportunity to stand back and really admire how an initial vision has been transformed into reality. How her key features, such as the very wide side decks that can be utilised as private guest balconies, the large open top deck and the large pool aft, have taken shape and really enhanced her design.” He added, “Seeing her head out into the daylight has just reaffirmed how well the design works and what a beautiful yacht she is. We still have a long way to go yet and the next few weeks will be critical as we put her through her paces with the sea trials ahead of us, but today is definitely a day to be celebrated.”

Daan Langezaal, Amels and Damen Yachting Project Manager, reiterates the impact of such a monumental project: “Seeing her in the open air and daylight is a real reminder of her size and presence but also highlights her design and how it has been worked to carry her form beautifully. The entire team at Amels and Damen Yachting is incredibly proud to have reached this latest milestone, something we could not have managed without the great cooperation of the Owner’s team and all our co-makers. We are now looking forward to the next phase and getting her out on the water for the sea trials.”

The Custom Amels 78 will now spend the next few weeks quayside at the Vlissingen City shipyard ready to undergo a number of sea trials.
