Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta Underway in Italy

By Emily Dawkins

Kickstarting the Mediterranean superyacht sailing season, the 2022 Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta is officially underway in Sardinia. Organised by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) of Porto Cervo, the 15th edition of the regatta welcomes new sponsorship from luxury Italian fashion house Giorgio Armani.

Taking place in the idyllic waters of Sardinia’s La Maddalena archipelago, the YCCS Superyacht Regatta is set to bring plenty of action to the start of the sailing season.

With races starting tomorrow and ending on Saturday, the 15th edition of the event welcomes four days of back-to-back races for three categories: Superyacht, Multihulls and the Southern Wind Rendezvous and Trophy.

This year, 18 vessels have enrolled to compete in the regatta, including Spirit Yachts’ 33.98m GEIST and Wally Yachts’ 30.48m MAGIC CARPET 3. Find a complete list of the 18 attending vessels and their respective categories below.

To mark the start of the show, two classic schooners, 42m MARIETTE OF 1915, a twin-masted gaff schooner delivered in 1915 by Nathanael Herreshoff, and 54.4m SHENANDOAH OF SARK, a three-masted gaff topsail schooner delivered in 1902 by Townsend and Downey, engaged in a friendly opening sail: previewing what is expected to be an incredible four days of sailing.

MARIETTE OF 1915 will compete in this year’s races, marking a return from her last entry in 2019, but SHENANDOAH OF SARK will instead remain a social attendee and will not compete.

‘We are delighted to open the sporting season in Porto Cervo with the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta,’ commented Michael Illbruck, Commodore of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, ‘it will, as always, be thrilling to see the imposing superyacht fleet lined up along the dock and sailing through the islands of the La Maddalena archipelago. On behalf of the YCCS, I'd like to welcome all the participants and wish each of them fair winds!’

The first race is scheduled to start at 12:30pm tomorrow with variable winds of five to eight knots forecast. We can’t wait to see what the racing will hold.
