Heesen Yachts’ Project SOPHIA Pairs Speed with Unparalleled Access

By Nora Hart

In a segment where size could limit access, Project SOPHIA is engineered to go further, both in range and in reach. Recently launched at the Heesen Yachts facility in Oss, this 50-metre all-aluminium creation signals an impressive evolution of the yard’s fast-cruising philosophy.

At just under the 500GT threshold, SOPHIA occupies a particularly desirable niche, pairing transatlantic capability with a remarkably shallow 2.15-metre draught. This opens the door to cruising grounds often inaccessible to yachts of this scale, most notably the stunning shallows of the Caribbean, without compromising her long-range credentials or onboard volume.

Her exterior, penned by Omega Architects, demonstrates athleticism, defined by a hard-chine hull and a Whisper Grey finish that beautifully reflects light. Beneath the surface lies more ingenuity: a carefully engineered hull form developed in-house by Heesen’s naval architects, delivering a reported 12% gain in efficiency. The result is not merely improved numbers on paper, but a quieter, more composed experience at sea, delivering that increasingly prized quality in modern design.

Performance remains central to SOPHIA’s identity. Twin MTU 16V 4000 M65L engines propel her to a top speed of 23 knots, while an impressive 3,100-nautical-mile range at 11 knots ensures she is as capable of crossing oceans as she is of island-hopping.

Inside, the vision of Cristiano Gatto Design Team unfolds across 324 square metres of living space. A palette of sage greens, warm bronzes and mustard tones creates an atmosphere that feels naturally luxurious. Accommodation is arranged for 12 guests across five staterooms, including a main deck master that enjoys forward-facing views and abundant natural light.

Life on board is designed to flow seamlessly between interior and exterior spaces. Aft, a shallow pool with floating loungers, then the beach club that transforms into a hub for waterside living, complete with direct sea access and space for an array of toys. Higher up, the sundeck is engineered for comfort underway, featuring a sliding windbreak that allows guests to enjoy the journey at speed.

Built entirely in aluminium and compliant with IMO Tier III standards, SOPHIA reflects Heesen’s vertically integrated approach, with interior craftsmanship executed at their dedicated Winterswijk facility. This control over build and finish is evident throughout, from the precision of her engineering to the tactility of her materials.

Currently available for delivery in June 2026, Project SOPHIA arrives as a compelling proposition: go fast, go far, and go where others cannot.
