Heesen’s ORION: A Hybrid Star Sets Sail for a New Era in Yachting

By Sophia Spanton

Heesen Yachts has once again proven why it stands at the forefront of innovation and craftsmanship in the superyacht world. The Dutch shipyard has just delivered its third superyacht of 2025, the dazzling 50-metre ORION, an all-aluminium, hybrid-powered marvel that is as striking as it is sustainable.

Fresh from her North Sea sea trials, ORION exceeded every benchmark, cementing Heesen’s legacy for precision engineering and performance. ORION’s sleek, contemporary exterior is the work of Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, whose signature vertical bow and sweeping lines give the yacht a distinctive presence. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows flood the 499 GT interior with natural light, creating an airy, inviting atmosphere.

Step inside, and you’ll find a bespoke interior by Cristiano Gatto Design, flawless Dutch craftsmanship. Over 37 different materials, including Italian marble, high-gloss woods, and woven leather, come together in a harmonious blend of luxury and comfort. The yacht accommodates twelve guests in six staterooms, featuring a main deck owner’s suite and a full-beam VIP suite, ensuring every guest experiences the pinnacle of onboard hospitality.

Her hybrid system enables silent cruising up to 10 knots, dramatically reducing fuel consumption and emissions. At 12 knots, she boasts an impressive transatlantic range of 3,750 nautical miles, consuming just 98 litres per hour. Switch to hybrid mode at 10 knots, and that figure drops to a mere 45 litres per hour. With a shallow draft of 2.15 metres, ORION is tailor-made for exploring the Bahamas’ turquoise shallows or gliding along the Mediterranean coast.

ORION is the result of a close partnership between Heesen, the owner’s team, and Cristiano Gatto. Together, they have created a yacht that not only meets but exceeds the owner’s vision, with custom furniture and finishes that set a new standard for personalization.

Ruud van der Stroom, Heesen’s CCO, sums it up:

'This yacht perfectly encapsulates our DNA: precision Dutch engineering, innovative hybrid technology, and the ability to deliver a high-quality product through dedicated collaboration with owners, designers, and our team of experts'.

As ORION joins the Ocean Independence charter fleet this summer, she offers select guests the opportunity to experience a new level of eco-conscious cruising, 'It’s exciting to envision the enjoyment she will bring to her owner and guests', says Anton Foord, broker for ORION. 'She offers an exceptional experience defined by performance, elegance, and technical innovation.'

With the delivery of ORION, Heesen reaffirms its position as a leader in the superyacht industry, demonstrating that high performance, sustainability, and luxury can go hand in hand. For those seeking the ultimate yachting experience, one that’s as gentle on the planet as it is exhilarating, ORION is ready to shine.
