Humphreys Yacht Design’s 50m Explorer Nears Completion at JFA Yachts

By Nora Hart

Humphreys Yacht Design has revealed stunning visuals of a new 50-metre custom explorer yacht currently nearing completion at JFA Yachts in France, with launch scheduled for later this year. Designed in close collaboration with the Owner and A2B Marine Projects, she is crafted for global cruising, family adventures, and extended periods of self-sufficiency. Combining cutting-edge efficiency, comfort, and safety, she’s built to venture into even remote corners of the globe with confidence.

Her hull and lower superstructure are forged from aluminium for strength and durability, while the upper superstructure uses lightweight composite materials to keep weight down and maintain a low centre of gravity. HYD has led both the naval architecture and the sleek, modern exterior design, while the interior will be curated by the renowned m2atelier.

Beneath her striking profile lies a highly refined fast-displacement hull form, paired with a hybrid propulsion system and an advanced stabilisation setup. She carries a 9.25m tender launched via a dedicated C-davit, along with two additional cranes, one on the aft deck and a third hidden on the foredeck, to handle a fleet of toys and support craft with ease. Practicality is a priority, with a cleverly designed centreline walkway on the tank deck allowing the crew discreet and direct access between living quarters and the engine room, a rare feature on a yacht of this size.

Her exterior design is dominated by expansive glazing and single-level decks that flood the interiors with natural light and provide uninterrupted 360-degree views. The Owner’s Suite on the upper deck offers private lounge and office spaces, plus an exterior lounge with a Jacuzzi. Below deck, four guest cabins accommodate family and friends, while quarters for 10 crew ensure smooth service. Social areas include a main deck galley, saloon, dining room, and multiple outdoor lounges with a bar and integrated BBQ.

Sustainability and operational independence are at the heart of her design. Powered by twin MTU diesel engines, she boasts a parallel hybrid propulsion system complemented by a large solar array and high-capacity battery bank. This allows her to cruise silently and emissions-free for extended periods, whether at anchor or under low-speed power. She can reach a top speed of 20 knots in hybrid boost mode, with an efficient cruising range exceeding 5,000 nautical miles at 12 knots.

By integrating advanced propulsion technology, optimised hull design, and carefully considered living spaces, Humphreys has created a vessel that balances performance, efficiency, and comfort. She is designed to meet the demanding requirements of long-range cruising with a focus on sustainability and operational independence, demonstrating HYD’s expertise in delivering well-rounded explorer yachts that are both capable and user-friendly.
